As a member of an “under-represented” group, one would think that I would be on board with the DEI train.
For the uninitiated, DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
An entire cottage industry that sprang forth after the Regents of the University of California vs Bakke case in 1978.
In this case, while the Supreme Court ruled against using racial quotas, it did say that colleges could use race as a factor in its decision making in order to increase diversity.
It’s the diversity statement that gave birth to the DEI industrial complex.
Fast-forward 45 years and DEI is ingrained in education, business and even the church.
Diversity has become the buzz-word of the last decade.
Yet, diversity for the sake of diversity has only resulted in discrimination.
This is because when people with good intentions want to right the wrongs of the past, the tendency is to over-correct.
And, in the case of DEI, the over-correction has led to a skin-level, sex-oriented sense of diversity.
It is not diversity based on the content of one’s character.
The diversity is based on one’s experiences.
Feelings and Oppression matters. Facts and Meritocracy do not.
On the contrary, God’s design for diversity is all-inclusive.
No one is ostracized or marginalized.
As it says in Acts 17:26,
And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,
The cornucopia of nations is a reflection of the heart of God.
When diversity is pursued from a biblical standpoint, it goes beyond the surface and looks deep into the soul of a person.
God’s diversity evaluates someone based on who they are, not what they do or who they do something with in private.
When we see diversity the way God does, no one is seen as a group, but are identified individually for the unique traits that each one possesses.
When we do that, we will treat each other appropriately as fellow image-bearers of God.
Oppression and Suppression will be replaced with Freedom and Opportunity.
Hollow attempts at diversity, equity, and inclusion will no longer be accepted or tolerated.
